Singapore granted its citizenship to around 23,100 foreigners last year (2022), with 1,300 new national identification cards going to children born overseas to Singaporean parents.
Approximately 34,500 new permanent residencies were also granted and these figures were slightly higher than those in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Citizenship for Foreigners
In 2019, Singapore granted 22,714 citizenships and 32,915 permanent residencies. Some people are making noise in Singapore that these new comers are not forced to do the dreaded national service since on average, 3,400 new citizens go through national service each year, according to Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.
