MP Lim Guan Eng has called on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the Chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), to publicly apologise for making allegedly defamatory statements about the Albukhary Foundation’s tax exemption cancellation. Guan Eng, who is also a former Finance Minister, urged Muhyiddin to immediately retract his statement. If he does not comply with the demand, legal action will be taken against him, and he has been given until today to do so.
Lim Guan Eng wrongfully defamed
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, refuted allegations that Guan Eng had cancelled the tax exemption for the Albukhary Foundation. The Prime Minister confirmed that Guan Eng did not cancel the tax exemption during his tenure, and that the power to grant tax exemptions is under the Director General of Inland Revenue.
Muhyiddin claimed on March 9, after being questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had cancelled the approved tax exemption for the Albukhary Foundation. Guan Eng denied that he had ever examined or directed the cancellation of the tax exemption for the Albukhary Foundation, and reiterated that he hopes the matter can be resolved by Muhyiddin apologising to him.
