The Malaysian Minister of Higher Education, Khaled Nordin, has announced that political parties will not be allowed to establish branches on university campuses. Nordin made the statement in response to a fellow Member of Parliament who opposed the idea, arguing that it would damage democracy on campus.

The decision is a reversal of a statement made earlier this month by the Ministry of Higher Education, which suggested that they could be given some flexibility to establish branches on university campuses. Nordin’s new announcement, however, is unequivocal, stating that such branches are not acceptable and that no political parties will be allowed to establish them.
The minister also clarified that although students may have some leeway in making statements, faculty members are subject to the same regulations as other public officials, not those under the University and College Act.
