In a significant turn of events, the Court of Appeal has acquitted Sam Ke Ting of reckless driving charges linked to the death of eight teen cyclists in Johor in 2017. A three-judge panel ruled unanimously that the charge was defective, allowing Sam’s appeal.
Her lawyer Hisyam Teh argued that there was a duplicity of charges, including two distinct offenses, making the charge illegal. Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail stated that the conviction was incorrect and the charge was defective.
Court of Appeal Verdict
This verdict overturns the previous conviction and six-year jail sentence, as well as a fine of RM6,000, handed down by the Johor Bahru High Court in April 2022.
