China’s President Xi Jinping has called on the country’s armed forces to focus on “strengthening military training oriented towards actual combat”. This follows recent army drills by Beijing intended to intimidate Taiwan, which China views as its territory.
Tougher Military Training
The heightened tension in the region was prompted by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to the United States last week, where she met with lawmakers. Xi urged the military to defend China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests, as well as protect overall peripheral stability.
The United States and the Philippines are also holding their largest-ever joint army drills this week, further escalating the situation. US army officers are saying there might be a war against China by 2025.
