A husband and wife were exposed as masterminds of a child trafficking ring, using International Malaysian Passports (IMP) to smuggle children from Sri Lanka to Europe. However, the Malaysian Immigration Department thwarted their plans by arresting two suspects.
Smuggling children
The Director-General of Immigration, Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, revealed that the syndicate had manipulated personal information of children under 12 from impoverished Malaysian families. They deceived parents into bringing their child’s birth certificate to the Immigration office, pretending to apply for an IMP for their own child. Foreign children from Sri Lanka, of similar age to the actual child, were also brought to the Immigration counter for fingerprinting and photographing.
The husband and wife, who acted as masterminds and “transporters,” escorting the victims to Europe, have been charged under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the syndicate’s operations and the number of trafficked children.
