The controversial topic of Malaysian Muslims marrying non-Muslims has always been a subject for debate. However, the government is making it clear that the laws preventing their marriages being recognised is here to stay. This is according to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976.

There are conservative Muslims in Malaysia stating that according to the Islamic law, both parties have to be of the same religion. This is regardless if the other party is not born as a Muslim. Furthermore, others state that the non-Muslim individual can always convert to Islam.
Opposing the conservatives, the liberals in Malaysia who want this law to be abolished, and are calling it for the sake of love and the freedom of religion. Regardless, a majority of the people are still against this change.
