Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in response to certain claims, has dismissed the notion that he excessively applies Islamic concepts in his administration by expanding the role of the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim). He meant to say he is not imposing Islam in everything he does. And perhaps he is not Islamist like the PAS. We know what that means!
The Prime Minister stated that the accusations made by a small number of non-Muslims reflect a lack of understanding regarding the importance of educating Muslims about the true essence of their religion.
JAKIM’s ROLE
Anwar expressed his intention for Jakim to go beyond religious and legal matters, emphasizing its involvement in economic issues, digital programs, and the education curriculum. He emphasized that the broader responsibility of Jakim is aimed at promoting the values of Islam. Anwar highlighted the concerns of potential clashes between communities if Muslims lack a deep understanding of Islamic teachings.
Not Islamist LIke PAS
Anwar also thanked his non-Muslim friends for their support and clarified that during his seven months in power, the government faced no opposition from non-Muslims. He encouraged religious scholars and teachers to provide constructive criticism but cautioned against engaging in divisive politics. Anwar emphasized the need for scholars to prioritize the well-being of Islam over partisan allegiances.
