Over 100 parliamentarians have written to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, urging him to provide greater support to exiled Afghan female footballers and advocate for the inclusion of Afghan women in international competitions.

FIFA urged to support Afghan women’s football

The letter, co-authored by Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, Khalida Popal (founder of Afghanistan women’s national team), and MP Julie Elliott, has garnered support from 76 UK parliament members and lawmakers from Australia, Portugal, and Italy.

They implore FIFA to take a stronger stance against the constraints placed on Afghan women’s participation in sports. Following the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan, the senior women’s national team sought refuge in Australia, while some players found support in Portugal, Italy, and the UK.

Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghan women have been banned from playing sports, and the national team remains unrecognized. FIFA maintains that the selection of players and teams is an internal matter.
