In commemoration of ASEAN Dengue Day this year, Dengue Prevention Advocacy Malaysia (DPAM) has been formed, uniting eight professional bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and esteemed medical experts with a strong focus on dengue.
Dengue prevention advocacy igniting battle against dengue
Despite a decline in dengue cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent data shows a resurgence, with a significant increase in cases and deaths compared to the previous year. Dr. Husnina Ibrahim, representing the Ministry of Health (MoH), emphasized the anticipated continuation of this trend, projecting a potential outbreak surpassing the historic 2019 outbreak.
While the MoH’s efforts have yielded positive results, including the introduction of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes and comprehensive guidelines, DPAM aims to synergize the collective efforts of stakeholders to strengthen its prevention, management, and control in Malaysia. The group’s focus will encompass various areas such as epidemiology, integrated vector management, patient care, and vaccines.
DPAM also intends to foster regional collaboration, working closely with the Asian Dengue Voice & Action (ADVA) group. Their joint efforts will culminate in Malaysia hosting the 7th Asia Dengue Summit in 2024. During the launch event, DPAM released a Resolution Paper proposing key strategies to achieve goals such as accurate data acquisition, sustainable vector management, and reduction of the dengue case fatality rate.
