An agent is being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting a bribe of RM18,000 at KLIA. The agent is accused of “resolving” a case involving an unqualified foreign tourist entering the country.
KLIA agent’s alleged bribery
According to sources, the middleman is said to have requested the bribe as part of an investigation into corruption allegations against immigration officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Tiong King Sing, recently acknowledged his involvement in the incident, citing a culture of corruption and chronic abuse of power at the country’s entry points.
The Anti-Corruption Agency is gathering statements from the immigration officers involved, along with two main witnesses. The investigation falls under Section 16 (a) of the MACC Act 2009, confirmed by Chief Commissioner Azam Baki.
