Previously, Gerrard distanced himself from the role but seems to have had a change of heart. Al-Ettifaq finished seventh in the previous season, and under Gerrard’s leadership, they aim to improve in a league that has seen increased quality with the involvement of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Having started his managerial career at Rangers and later moving to Aston Villa, Gerrard had mixed success before being replaced by Unai Emery at Villa Park. Marcelo Brozovic, an Inter Milan midfielder, also joined the Saudi league, highlighting the growing trend of notable names making the move to improve the domestic competition in the country.
