It all started with an influencer posting a photo of the cut up squid that he was preparing on Twitter. He intended to make “Sambal Sotong” which is an innocent move, but a whole other array of topics opened up. Unfortunately, netizens are now making sexist remarks towards a number of Gen-Z and Millennial Malaysian women.
Debating over dried squid
A Twitter user claims that there are women out there who can’t cook squids but would request for a high “hantaran.” when translated to English, it means dowry. However, this is a relative stretch as there are plenty of women who are working and have their own solid careers.
Other users started to respond to the user by posting a video of a woman who is fighting against this stigma. The woman adds that in today’s world, women are working, and to work they need an expensive education to do so.
