After nine years in Australian immigration detention, former police commando Sirul Azhar Umar is now free but remains silent on who ordered the killing of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu. In an interview with Al-Jazeera, Sirul stated he couldn’t reveal the mastermind’s identity and he was paid RM1 million to shut his mouth.

But his superior Azilah Hadri mentioned a “special operation” for then-Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Najib Abdul Razak. Sirul disclosed past payments for his silence and admitted to being controlled even in Australia, where he says he is safer than in Malaysia. He emphasized his commitment to telling the truth, aiming to build a new life, and specifically cited protecting Najib as the reason for his silence.
