Proficiency in Malay remains a prerequisite for Malaysian citizenship, per the Federal Constitution. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah stated that applicants must demonstrate proficiency through written tests and face-to-face interviews. The Federal Constitution mandates basic Malay language knowledge for Article 16 citizenship applicants and sufficient proficiency for Article 19 applicants.

Shamsul Anuar revealed that the Home Ministry received 32,000 citizenship applications as of November, surpassing the annual target. Up until October, the ministry had processed 10,381 citizenship application results. The emphasis on Malay language proficiency aligns with constitutional provisions.
