Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s administration allegedly funneled at least AS$7.8 million (RM36.27 million) into businesses owned by ex-US President Donald Trump, per a Democratic Party report. Payments totaling AS$248,962 (RM1.156 million) covered Najib’s stays at the Trump International Hotel from 2017 to 2020.

The report highlights Najib’s 2017 visit during the US Department of Justice’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) investigation, detailing payments, including a nightly AS$10,000 presidential suite. The visit aimed to bolster Najib’s image pre-election, portraying Malaysia’s US investments and deflecting opposition allegations concerning 1MDB.

Experts saw it as the former Prime Minister’s PR move to refute opposition claims about his global reception amid the 1MDB scandal.
