When George Clooney made the movie ‘The Boys in the Boat‘ he was probably not expecting the backlash from critics who are saying the movie is predictable, painstaking or an ‘animatronic museum display’. But in his defence, this is a piece of history that everyone knows about and the movie is perhaps supposed to be a reflection of the heroic acts and what went behind the scene and in the minds of the protagonists. This is definitely not the Chariot of Fire.

The move is Clooney’s new feature as a director and it is about the men’s eight rowing team that won gold for the US at the 1936 “Hitler” Berlin Olympics. The Independent UK says Clooney’s crime, it seems, is to have made a period drama about the triumph of plucky underdogs in an era when audiences simply can’t take such stories seriously. “The question, though, is whether these tepid responses reveal more about their own prejudices than about any shortcomings in the film itself,” says the paper.
