In Kelantan, widows and single women seek foreign partners to avoid societal stigma. Financially secure, they offer allowances, housing, and business prospects in “contract marriages,” committing to stay married unofficially for up to five years.
Kelantan women forge “contract marriages”
Immigration data reveals 17,137 residents sought long-term social visit passes for foreign spouses in 2022, mostly women applying for their husbands. The majority are Thai, Bangladeshi, or Myanmar nationals. Immigration officials note this practice isn’t new; local women marry for support and security.
Loneliness and societal pressures drive these unions, seen as an alternative to traditional marriages, offering both companionship and economic benefits.
