Allies are freaking out about a Trump Return

The real possibility of Donald Trump’s return to office as President, a prospect brought nearer by his victory in the Iowa caucus on January 15th and the withdrawal of Ron DeSantis from the Republican race on January 21st, has sparked fear among Western world leaders in particular. Mr Trump also looks set to sweep New Hampshire in its presidential primary Today. If he wins there, it will shake many across the globe. But why?

Allies worried

An American lawmaker involved in diplomacy with allies told The Economist that foreign governments “are freaked out by what they see on social media about American democracy”. The issues of tariff wars, the possible dropping of Ukraine as an ally and Taiwan too in the process, treating other allies as a business transaction in which the US must lead or win, aggressive bartering with enemies and further rejection of global rules…are the points that Trump is known for. Europe is sure worried!
