The Pardons Board headed by the Malaysian King met on Jan 29, according to a Cabinet minister, after a report said the meeting had decided on an application from imprisoned former prime minister Najib Razak. Dr Zaliha Mustafa, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department who sits on the Pardons Board, told reporters on Jan 30 that the meeting took place at the national palace. She did not say if Najib’s pardon bid was discussed.

Pardons Board – No statement yet
A message making the rounds on WhatsApp in particular says Najib Razak is not getting a pardon but his jail term will be reduced to 6 years and he will have to pay a fine of RM50 million, instead of the RM210 million. Read the text in Malay below:

Hukuman Najib Razak dikurangkan kepada hanya 6 tahun penjara (asal 12 tahun) dan denda sebanyak RM50 juta sahaja (asal RM210 juta). Sumber: ‘Sumber’. However, there are no official statements on the matter as the Pardon Board will issue a statement soon. Utusan was the first to publish an article saying Najib was pardoned but has since then retracted with an apology. Updates coming soon.
