 A man’s death sentence was overturned by the Federal Court and commuted to 33 years in jail and 12 strokes of the cane for murdering his fiancee by dousing her with petrol and setting her alight seven years ago.

A panel of three judges chaired by Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof made the unanimous decision to set aside the death sentence handed down by the Johor Baru High Court against Mohamed Hafiz Mohd Bakri, 36, after allowing his final appeal against the sentence. On Oct 5, 2020, the Johor Baru High Court sentenced Hafiz to death after he was found guilty of killing Nina Farrina Simbul, 21, at a house in Taman Sri Bahagia, Tampoi, Johor Baru on April 21, 2017.
