International press freedom watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), expresses deep concern over Malaysia’s imposition of a media code of ethics. RSF’s Asia-Pacific director, Cedric Alviani, warns that while there have been improvements, government intervention in media regulation is regressive.

He emphasizes the importance of an independent media council crafting ethical guidelines, rather than government imposition. Alviani underscores the need for democracies like Malaysia to counter authoritarian influences in the region, particularly from China. Malaysia’s status as a democracy with press freedom makes it crucial in this regard, but government actions risk undermining these gains, RSF cautions.
