Malaysia is considering extending a China-led rail project worth RM50.27 billion to the Thai border, aiming to strengthen economic ties. The 665km railway, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to connect Malaysia’s east and west coasts by 2026.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke expressed openness to extending the track for further integration with Thailand’s rail networks. The original proposal, led by China Communications Construction, is 60% complete. Thailand also plans a land bridge project to bypass the congested Strait of Malacca. Both countries aim for closer cooperation in transportation and national development for mutual benefit.
