A former saleswoman, Shuhazani Shoib, won RM3.8 million in damages in a medical negligence case against a government hospital. Doctors’ insufficient and delayed treatment during her pregnancy led to her baby’s death in her womb at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Shuhazani, now unable to walk and suffering from cognitive disorder, developed complete HELLP syndrome with acute kidney failure and brain bleeding.

Putrajaya admitted liability in 2021. Justice Ahmad Shahrir Salleh ordered compensation, stating Shuhazani will need lifelong assistance. The government appealed against the quantum. Lawyers Karthi Kanthabalan and Abdul Azeem Seeni Muthu Ambalam represented Shuhazani, while government lawyers appealed the decision.
