Taiwan says on May 15 that it had detected 45 Chinese military aircraft around Taiwan, the highest single-day number in 2024, less than a week before the country inaugurates its new president whom China regards as a “dangerous separatist”. Beijing regards the self-governing Taiwan as its territory to be reunified for a Greater China. Taiwan rejects China’s claims over the Island.

China has warned that Mr Lai Ching-te, the current vice-president who will be sworn in as President on May 20, would bring “war and decline” to the island, and tensions have soared since he won the January polls. Thus, China has increased the flight of its aircraft around Taiwan in a show of force!
