Couples married abroad can still register children’s births Now

Couples married abroad who haven’t formalized their marriage in Malaysia can still register their children’s births by following National Registration Department (NRD) procedures, says Pahang NRD director Mohammad Abdullah. Parents should register promptly and can sign documents together under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957.

Couples Married Abroad

Initially, a child is attributed to “Abdullah” or a name from Asmaul Husna (which is the 99 names of God in Arabic). After marriage documents are verified, parents can reattribute the child to the biological father. Over the past five years, 1,948 late registrations were recorded, mostly due to irregular marriage documentation and ignorance of the 60-day registration requirement.
