The Kuala Lumpur High Court is set to decide this Wednesday on Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s judicial review to disqualify former Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif and two others from chairing the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) concerning the sovereignty of Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge.
High court high stakes for Mahathir
The civil court’s decision comes just an hour before the RCI in Putrajaya is scheduled to summon the former Prime Minister to investigate whether Malaysia should have withdrawn its appeal against the 2008 International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision. The ICJ awarded sovereignty of Pedra Branca to Singapore, Middle Rocks to Malaysia, and South Ledge to the “state in whose territorial waters it is located.”
Judge Amarjeet Singh’s decision will also determine whether the RCI proceedings will be held in private or open to the public and if Mahathir will be allowed to bring his lawyer to the investigation.
