Suaram Now Challenges Police Over Unnecessary Assembly Permits

Today, Suaram criticized the police for insisting on permits for assemblies despite the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 not requiring them. The human rights NGO responded to reports that Kota Kinabalu’s police chief denied approval for a ‘We Want Water Sabah’ assembly by University Malaysia Sabah students. 

Suaram challenges police over permit plans 

Suaram’s Executive Director, Sevan Doraisamy, stated that the national police chief had reinforced on March 4 that permits are unnecessary, and organizers only need to inform the police five days prior. 

Sevan urged the police to stop confusing the public and protect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, calling for facilitation of the peaceful #WeWantWater demonstration and safety of participants.
