KUALA LUMPUR: A 60-year-old woman was scammed out of RM1.25 million by a man she met on Facebook, who claimed to be a Singaporean working in the UK. He promised to meet her in Malaysia for a Petronas project and asked for a loan as capital, which she transferred in 11 transactions.

She realized the scam only after discussing it with a friend. Bukit Aman CCID director, Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, highlighted the emotional manipulation involved in such scams and noted 792 similar cases in 2022, amounting to RM56.2 million in losses.
