BEIJING: China and Russia conducted live-fire naval exercises in the South China Sea this week, as reported by Russian and Chinese state media. The exercises, named ‘Maritime Cooperation – 2024,’ began with an opening ceremony in Zhanjiang, China. The SCS is a major trade route and any military conflict will impact the Asean region.

Both nations deployed at least three vessels each for the three-day event, focusing on joint air defense and anti-submarine drills involving PLA naval aviation. The Russian Pacific Fleet and PLA Navy also performed artillery firing exercises. These drills underscore the strengthened military and trade ties between China and Russia, particularly following sanctions imposed by the United States.
