Japanese cyclist Shinji Nakano apologised to Malaysians on TikTok after a crash with Malaysian Olympian Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom during the Men’s Keirin final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The collision, which also involved Great Britain’s Jack Carlin, led to Shah Firdaus being relegated from his initial 4th place finish to 6th overall. Following the incident, Nakano’s social media was flooded with negative comments from Malaysian netizens blaming him for the crash.
In his TikTok post, Nakano, holding his country’s flag, apologised in Japanese and requested that his family not be involved, as it was his mistake alone.
