A new freight train service between Selangor, Malaysia, and Kunming, China, was launched on August 17. This service, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative or BRI, aims to boost trade in vegetables and halal products. The route will pass through Laos and Thailand, and reduce transit time from over 20 days by sea to about 10 days.

The trial service begins with full operations expected by September. The initiative could lead to further rail collaborations and potentially high-speed passenger rail projects. China Railway and Malaysia’s KTM are expected to cooperate on this new cargo route.
