Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has cancelled the Merdeka Eve 2024 celebration at Dataran Merdeka on 30 August due to recent high-profile incidents. Announced on their official Facebook page, the cancellation respects victims of these incidents.

This includes the tragic sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India on 23 August, which claimed the life of 48-year-old Indian national Viyayaletchumy.
The search and rescue operation continues, and Jalan Masjid India remains closed. Another sunken road was found nearby on 28 August. DBKL urged Malaysians to celebrate independence with patriotism.
