Scoot’s upcoming Singapore-Melaka route, set to launch on October 23, has sparked environmental concerns due to its short distance of 216km, the shortest in Changi Airport’s history. Critics argue that short flights are inefficient in terms of fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to ground transportation. For instance, a flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur produces 37.75kg of CO2 per economy seat, far exceeding the 10kg generated by bus or car passengers. The new Melaka flight, expected to take 30 to 40 minutes, could result in 30kg of CO2 emissions per seat, intensifying the environmental debate.
