Malaysia increases sugar tax to combat diabetes and obesity
Health Minister Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad announced an increase in the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax, following its success in reducing sugar consumption.
The new tax, raised by 10 sen per litre under Budget 2024 to 50 sen per litre, led to a 9.25% drop in sweet drink consumption nationwide. This proactive measure aims to curb the rise of diseases, especially diabetes.
