Malaysia is renowned for its sugary foods and ranks fifth globally in diabetes cases. Excessive sugar intake is harmful. 

Malaysia increases sugar tax to combat diabetes and obesity 

Health Minister Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad announced an increase in the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax, following its success in reducing sugar consumption. 

The new tax, raised by 10 sen per litre under Budget 2024 to 50 sen per litre, led to a 9.25% drop in sweet drink consumption nationwide. This proactive measure aims to curb the rise of diseases, especially diabetes.
