The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized 21 vehicles, mostly luxury MPVs, for illegally offering taxi services to tourists. JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that the operation followed complaints of tourists being overcharged, including one who paid RM993 for a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, far above the standard RM300 rate. This crackdown, the first in Klang Valley, inspected 35 vehicles between September 2 and 6. The owners and drivers face fines up to RM10,000 or two years’ jail if found guilty. JPJ plans to collaborate with tourism authorities and expand operations nationwide to protect Malaysia’s image.
