Elon Musk’s Neuralink announced that its brain-chip implant, Blindsight, aimed at restoring vision, has received the U.S. FDA’s “breakthrough device” designation. This tag is granted to medical devices that address life-threatening conditions, expediting their development and review. Blindsight aims to restore vision even for those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve. For patients with an intact visual cortex, it may even offer sight to those blind from birth. Initial vision will be low-resolution, like Atari graphics, but could improve to surpass natural vision, potentially enabling perception in infrared, ultraviolet, or radar wavelengths.
