The Cabinet has unanimously rejected a proposal to make halal certification mandatory for restaurants and food companies that don’t serve pork or alcohol, as reported by Sin Chew Daily. Halal certification will remain voluntary, allowing operators to decide if they wish to apply. The government currently has no plans to enforce this certification. However, restaurants seeking to attract more Muslim customers can still opt to apply. This decision comes after a long-standing controversy surrounding halal certification, which has sparked political upheaval, particularly between parties in the unity government, notably UMNO and DAP.
