A coalition of environmental, human rights, and indigenous groups has urged the European Union to classify Sarawak as “high risk” under its anti-deforestation regulation. The groups, including Human Rights Watch and Save Rivers, claim the rainforests and indigenous rights are threatened by deforestation for timber and oil palm plantations. They allege the state’s laws fail to protect indigenous land rights, allowing companies to disregard claims without consequence. If the state is designated “high risk,” the EU would impose stricter import regulations on wood and palm oil products linked to deforestation or rights violations, potentially restricting their sale in EU markets. – Save the trees!
