To address the high usage of plastic bags in Malaysia, the government is collaborating with 16 retail chains to eliminate single-use plastics by 2030. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced the “Say No to Single-Use Plastics” campaign, starting October 1, involving chains like 7-Eleven, AEON, and Mydin.
16 retail chains to stop providing plastic bags
This initiative aims to reduce 200 million single-use plastics annually. The Malaysia Retailers Association and other organisations also support the campaign.
Nga highlighted the environmental and financial costs of plastic waste, noting the government spends over RM2 billion annually on waste management. Malaysians produce 14.5 million tonnes of waste yearly, posing significant challenges.
