While Yin Shao Loong on X is saying the EU exported plastic and other wastes to Malaysia in the past, the Union has since announced a ban on such waste exports to Southeast Asia. But, as we know, a ban is only good if it’s enforced. The ban was part of a revision to the Waste Shipment Regulation. However, the ban doesn’t solve all the problems, as there are still ways to ship plastic waste to other countries, including Turkey. In April this year, DW reported that the illegal waste trade from Europe to Southeast Asia has emerged as a highly profitable, low-risk criminal enterprise with a major impact on the environment, economy, and human health. Meanwhile, The EU is planning to implement a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in 2026 that will tax the export of steel and other items from Malaysia or a metal tax.
