To bolster the War on Sugar initiative, the government intends to incrementally raise the excise tax on sugary beverages by 40 cents per litre starting January 1, 2025.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that this measure is designed to support the War on Sugar campaign initiated by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) on June 29. The Finance Minister mentioned that the funds generated will be utilised for public health expenditures, such as the inclusion of SGLT-2 inhibitors for diabetes treatment.
