A new bill allowing house arrest as an alternative punishment for certain offences will be tabled in Parliament next year, according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. The bill, approved by the Cabinet, is currently being drafted by the Attorney-General’s Chambers and the prisons department. Once finalized, it will be presented to the Cabinet and then Parliament. This follows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement during the 2025 Budget, proposing designated home detention under strict monitoring by prison officers. Former Prime Minister Najib Razak previously sought house arrest, but his application was rejected by the court in July.
