A coalition of native rights groups and activists in Sarawak and Sabah has raised strong concerns over the Federal Government’s plan to revive the National Service (NS) training scheme, which would require teens as young as 16 to participate. Sarawakian activist Peter John Jaban highlighted that the two previous NS programs saw 23 serious incidents, including injuries, abuses, and fatalities among trainees. Joined by leaders like Timothy Jagak, William Watson, Stephanie Lazarus, and Daniel Jambun, the coalition condemned the mandatory nature of the scheme. “There is no justification for reviving NS or forcing families into this program,” they stated.
