Sarawak rights activist Peter John Jaban criticized former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s comment suggesting that Sarawak should assist poorer Malaysian states due to its high-income status. Peter, founder of Saya Anak Sarawak, claimed that Mahathir’s centralist policies during his tenure diverted resources from Sabah and Sarawak to Peninsular Malaysia, ignoring the federal system and marginalizing the Borneo states. He argued that Sarawak’s economic success was achieved despite, not because of, Mahathir’s policies. Pointing to Malaysia’s iconic projects like the Petronas Twin Towers, Peter suggested they symbolize Borneo’s resources, which heavily funded national development while local needs were overlooked. He said Mahathir is ‘our past, not our future.”
