Malaysian-born researcher Kong Xin Ying has earned dual honors in 2023, making her country proud. She received the prestigious MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 (TR35) Asia Pacific Award and was named among the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University. A research fellow at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, Kong led the development of catalysts that can decompose non-biodegradable plastics within a day, a process that usually takes over a century. Her innovation also generates valuable chemicals, helping combat plastic pollution sustainably. At just 32, Kong hopes these recognitions inspire her to continue advancing sustainable solutions.
