Malaysian authorities are cracking down on foreign-registered vehicles using Malaysian plates to purchase subsidised RON95 petrol. Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) Director Azmil Zainal Adnan stated that such actions are punishable under the Road Transport Act 1987, which imposes fines of RM5,000 to RM20,000, up to five years in prison, or both. This enforcement follows a viral video showing a driver of a Singaporean car switching plates before refueling. The incident sparked debate online, with questions raised about Malaysians in Singapore who own Singapore-registered vehicles and whether they, too, would face penalties if they refuel with RON95 in Malaysia.
