PKR MP Hassan Abdul Karim has raised concerns about Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment to transparency, warning that crony capitalism is resurfacing with the appointment of U Mobile as Malaysia’s second 5G operator. Questioning U Mobile’s ties, Hassan noted that its largest shareholder, Straits Mobile Investments Pte Ltd, holds a 48.3% stake and is based in Singapore. He also mentioned that Maxis, a major telecom provider, is challenging the decision. Calling this the “return of the ‘mahakaya’ crony capitalists,” Hassan argued that the influence of such powerful groups now surpasses that seen under Mahathir Mohamad’s administration, impacting governance efforts.
