In Q3 2024, Malaysia saw a rise in low-skilled employment, with 1.949 million Malaysians holding such roles, up by around 100,000 from the previous quarter, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia. Skill-related underemployment, where tertiary-educated individuals work in roles below their qualifications, remains a significant issue, affecting 36.8% of educated workers and limiting potential economic benefits from skilled labor. Meanwhile, the country’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 3.2%, with 547,900 unemployed individuals, down 1.8% from the previous quarter. Malaysia’s overall labor force grew by 0.7% to 17.26 million, with a steady participation rate of 70.5%.
