Mauritius’s ruling party has conceded defeat following yesterday’s general election, with outgoing Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth acknowledging a significant loss to the opposition. As vote counting continues across the island, Jugnauth admitted his party had suffered a “severe defeat” and extended best wishes to the nation. His administration faced mounting criticism over alleged abuses and economic mismanagement, which brought the party’s decade-long tenure to an abrupt close. The opposition, led by former Prime Ministers Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Berenger, appears poised to secure a commanding majority, with Jugnauth himself losing his seat in his constituency.
